Frequently Asked Questions. Common Legal Topics. Self-Help Solutions.

By taking people’s law-related questions then posting answers to ‘Ask’, Standard Legal has built a great library of pro se (self-help) legal information. Every answer is written in understandable language too: no lawyer jargon, no attorney-speak, no legaleze. Just straight-forward Q&A to assist you in dealing with the legal issues most everyone faces at some point in life.

So let’s get started! First, let’s see if your questions has already been asked and answered. Select an ‘Ask Category’ from the menu to review all of that topic’s Frequently Asked Questions. Or use the search box to find a specific Q&A of interest to you.

Don’t See Your Law Question? Ask Standard Legal!

Get an answer to your law question for FREE! Submit your question by email to ask@StandardLegal.com, and we will reply to you directly. If your question might be of interest to others, we will also post it to our Ask Standard Legal blog. (We won’t use your name or cite identifying circumstances.)

IMPORTANT POINTS ABOUT THE QUESTIONS YOU SUBMIT:

1) Remember, we cannot provide specific legal advice to you. We can address common questions of legal fact, meaning legal topics covered in a general manner and answers to questions of fact. We cannot answer “what should I do” questions, nor can we cover questions that won’t have a broad application to other readers. In other words, we can’t tell you how to handle a specific asset in grandma’s Last Will and Testament, but we can answer a factual question about Wills and we can discuss how most people might handle a Last Will and Testament in certain circumstances.

2) We can only address questions related to common pro se legal topics, typically limited to those listed in the column at the left. We will not answer questions related to criminal or civil court proceedings, as we almost always recommend the services of a qualified local attorney in these instances. Nor can we provide free research services for narrow questions that are not common legal issues; for that, again, you must secure the services of an attorney for such matters.

3) We will always forward questions about the products and services of Standard Legal (i.e. form use functionality, download questions, shopping cart questions, etc.) to our Client Services department for immediate response.

4) We will post the questions and answers to this site if we feel the information will benefit our visitors. We won’t use your name or cite clearly identifying circumstances, but we reserve all rights to post questions and answers and any follow-up email exchanges.

Now that we’ve covered these four important points about this site, please go ahead and Ask Standard Legal — and we will do our best to answer it!
